Start Your Exploration at the Museum of the City of New York

Your visit to New York City can have an exciting and informative start to your sight-seeing checklist with a stop to the Museum of the City of New York. As the official museum of the city, this building allows you to acquaint yourself with the history and foundation of the nation’s largest city. Enjoy varied exhibitions that explore its diverse cultures, boundless creativity, and the people past and present who’ve come to settle here from all over the world.

Discover the Melting Pot

Founded nearly 100 years ago, the Museum of the City of New York creates several special exhibits each year that run for a few months at a time. Permanent features include Timescapes, an engrossing 22-minute film that traces the growth of the city from a settlement of a few hundred Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans to its present status as one of the world’s great cities. Narrated by award-winning actor Stanley Tucci, the film features maps, photographs, prints, and paintings from the Museum’s collections.

Even the stairway is fun and informative at the Museum. Come see and experience ‘City Steps,’ which will take you from floor to floor. Quotations about New York from notable people escort you upstairs, including sayings by John Adams, Walt Whitman, Thomas Jefferson, Leon Trotsky, E.B. White, and others, are accompanied by images from the museum’s collection.

Immerse Yourself in History

Be sure to stop by some of the other permanent installments, such as the collection of late 19th and early 20th Century clothing, jewelry and portraiture amassed by the city’s elite during the gilded age. See how barons of industry such as Vanderbilt and Gould competed to show their wealth by spending lavishly and publicly.

For a view of the opposite side of the social coin, check out the Activist New York exhibition, which chronicles the long history of protests and change-making that still is evident in the streets of the city today. Never has agitation seemed as interesting as when displayed with signs, photos and artifacts from different causes and eras of activism during the evolution of the city. The historic efforts of residents in all five boroughs will inspire you with their passion for change.

hassle free experience

(Reviewed on 4/6/2015) -

"I bought the 3D+1 free day package. It was great as for a flat rate, we settled all the attractions. The package also included the top of the rock and woodbury tour. Woodbury was a great place to shop! It was far better than macy's. I started my tour on a saturday and traffic was smooth. By the third day which was Monday, traffic was heavy and it meant that bus took longer to go to the stops. Overall, I felt it was great as it was hassle free and I did not have to use the subway for the 4 days I was on tour. There were ample city sights NY stops and agents around to help too.

Best value for your money

(Reviewed on 2/9/2015) -

"I went to this trip with my daughter, and to be honest, I find that it’s the best purchase I’ve made with my money. This package in one word is complete. They take you downtown and you get to stop at the Empire State Building and Rockerfeller Center, among other places. You can also stroll around in Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. One of the best things though, is that every driver and guide has been friendly and accommodating. If I ever go to New York again, I will definitely book a tour with City Sights. "

Romantic getaway

(Reviewed on 1/26/2015) -

"For a couple from a small town in Washington, going to a big city like New York is a bit intimidating. But this tour removed the nerves of my wife and I. At first I was doubtful, because how can a tour with other people be romantic? But then we found out that we pretty much control the tour. We get on and off the bus when we want and however long we want. I guess the only downer was when it rained. It’s not exactly comforting to be on top of the Empire State building, while it’s raining and windy. Overall though, I think we’ll do it again. "

Money spent wisely
