Start Your Exploration at the Museum of the City of New York

Your visit to New York City can have an exciting and informative start to your sight-seeing checklist with a stop to the Museum of the City of New York. As the official museum of the city, this building allows you to acquaint yourself with the history and foundation of the nation’s largest city. Enjoy varied exhibitions that explore its diverse cultures, boundless creativity, and the people past and present who’ve come to settle here from all over the world.

Discover the Melting Pot

Founded nearly 100 years ago, the Museum of the City of New York creates several special exhibits each year that run for a few months at a time. Permanent features include Timescapes, an engrossing 22-minute film that traces the growth of the city from a settlement of a few hundred Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans to its present status as one of the world’s great cities. Narrated by award-winning actor Stanley Tucci, the film features maps, photographs, prints, and paintings from the Museum’s collections.

Even the stairway is fun and informative at the Museum. Come see and experience ‘City Steps,’ which will take you from floor to floor. Quotations about New York from notable people escort you upstairs, including sayings by John Adams, Walt Whitman, Thomas Jefferson, Leon Trotsky, E.B. White, and others, are accompanied by images from the museum’s collection.

Immerse Yourself in History

Be sure to stop by some of the other permanent installments, such as the collection of late 19th and early 20th Century clothing, jewelry and portraiture amassed by the city’s elite during the gilded age. See how barons of industry such as Vanderbilt and Gould competed to show their wealth by spending lavishly and publicly.

For a view of the opposite side of the social coin, check out the Activist New York exhibition, which chronicles the long history of protests and change-making that still is evident in the streets of the city today. Never has agitation seemed as interesting as when displayed with signs, photos and artifacts from different causes and eras of activism during the evolution of the city. The historic efforts of residents in all five boroughs will inspire you with their passion for change.

    It was great!

    (Reviewed on 5/13/2015) -

"I had bought a pack bus+cruise+ helicopter tour. It was great! Unfortunately some buses are really old... Earphones do not still work... Comments in French are poor (we listen to more music than something else) What a pity!

    Fun companions

    (Reviewed on 1/27/2015) -

"People in this tour are fun companions. From the 2 floor bus ride, this was my first time by the way, up to the observatory deck. Everything was great. But then it was the helicopter ride that beats it all. It was an amazing ride."
